“To err is human; to forgive, divine” is an aphorism penned by Alexander Pope (1688-1744). It essentially means all people commit sins and make mistakes. On the other hand, God forgives them, and people are acting in a godlike (divine) way when they forgive. This module will show that to lead is human, and divine.Experts assert that because leadership has been so tied to management recently, that it has largely come across as a Western idea and therefore rejected by some. Yet leadership is neither a Western construct, nor is it a new idea. The concept of leadership precedes Western culture by thousands of years—as we shall soon see—and cuts across the centuries and cultures. Considering how key leadership itself is and how vital the person of the leader is in particular (the focus of the Growth Series), it is imperative that a leader understands the source and its raison d’etre.
In this module 2 (of 8) of the DeepLEAD Growth Series, To Lead is Human, you will:
Be introduced to the source and raison d’etre of leadership, as human and divine,
Explore the sacred call to lead from four dimensions,
Excavate the timeless mandate of leadership,
Be impressed upon that leadership is not a modern western or (post)modern management concept, especially an Americanism, but that it is a timeless topic spanning all of history and in virtually every culture,
Begin to be exposed to the differences between leadership and management, and
Examine the character-leadership connection.
Who this course is for?
LeaderVarsity is aimed at both youth/learners as an emerging workforce and established leaders, especially teachers and executives who shape the world of learning and beyond but who may inadvertently have gaps in their own leadership formation. From the foregoing, it is evident that Leadervarsity “promote[s] lifelong learning opportunities for all”, the fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). Again, if by 2030 Africa would have “substantially increase[d] the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills… for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship,” according to SDG 4.4, then an edtech intervention like LeaderVarsity at scale is a sine qua non. The tech-enabled and tech-based nature of LeaderVarsity provides the kind of access (anyone anywhere) that makes SDG 4 vision of inclusivity and equitability of quality education happen. The goal of LeaderVarsity is the fulfilment of SDGs 4 (education), 8 (decent work and economic growth) and 17 (partnerships).
