Leadership is the ‘L’ word. And it is incredibly important, as strongly put in the introductory lesson to DeepLEADTM. Whether in normal times or unusual ones, the tenets and principles of great leadership ought to be passed on to each generation.“Politics is dirty.” “Gen Z doesn’t do hierarchy.” The current rejection of 20th century ‘command and control’ and ‘authoritarian’ leadership to rather embrace a flatter perception of the leader—plus the notion of 21st century ‘distributed leadership’—tends to make the word ‘leadership’ undesirable, even demonized in some quarters. For many, leaders and leadership have had a bad rap, a negative reputation, hence the title of this module, The ‘L’ Word—Leadership is not a dirty word, with the wild hope to change that narrative in the head and heart of anyone who cares to pay attention.
In this module 1 (of 8) of the DeepLEAD Growth Series, The “L’ Word, you will:
Be exposed to the wide array of leadership opinions and definitions to appreciate the breath and nuance of the subject,
Lay the foundation for the topic of leadership in a memorable and definitive way for not just the course itself but for all of life,
Establish the paradigm that the current rejection of 20th century ‘command and control’ and ‘authoritarian’ leadership thus the embracing of a flatter perception of leader plus distributed leadership does not exclude how vital leadership is and what it can/cannot do, and
Examine deeply the YAW PERBI definition of a leader, which we will use throughout the course.
Who this course is for?
LeaderVarsity is aimed at both youth/learners as an emerging workforce and established leaders, especially teachers and executives who shape the world of learning and beyond but who may inadvertently have gaps in their own leadership formation. From the foregoing, it is evident that Leadervarsity “promote[s] lifelong learning opportunities for all”, the fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). Again, if by 2030 Africa would have “substantially increase[d] the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills… for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship,” according to SDG 4.4, then an edtech intervention like LeaderVarsity at scale is a sine qua non. The tech-enabled and tech-based nature of LeaderVarsity provides the kind of access (anyone anywhere) that makes SDG 4 vision of inclusivity and equitability of quality education happen. The goal of LeaderVarsity is the fulfilment of SDGs 4 (education), 8 (decent work and economic growth) and 17 (partnerships).
